Italian Wall Lizard - Podarcis siculus

(Rafinesque, 1810)

An introduced population of Italian Wall Lizards has existed on Orcas Island in Washington State since at least 1997. Some pictures and brief information about this population can be found on this flickr page. The photographer has identified the species as the Common Wall Lizard - Podarcis muralis, and speculates that the population may have originated from specimens brought from the well-established population of P. muralis found on nearby Vancouver Island. However, the lizard in his picture is not the same species that is found on Vancouver Island. It has been identified by Podarcis expert Guntram Deichsel as Podarcis siculus, possibly an intergrade of two subspecies: P. s. campestris and P. s. siculus which occur naturally around Rome, but that cannot be certain without genetics testing.
